This week, we wanted to celebrate the wide variety of clubs available at Churston. Creating an impact is at the heart of a true Culture of Giving. Philanthropy in schools isn't just about fundraising - it’s about creating lasting value for our students, both now and in the future. Investing in spaces like our school library gives students an environment that encourages independent learning, quiet study and a love for reading. It’s a space that benefits everyone: from our new Year 7s to our Sixth Formers and staff. Thanks to recent support, we’ve added new reading nooks complete with storage for book donations, cosy seating, student artwork and plants - creating a warm, welcoming space to relax and read. Thank you to everyone who donated to the Churston Together Fund, supported Friends of Churston events and book wishlist requests. You are all helping Make More Possible. #CFGS #churstongrammar #churstongrammarschool #ChurstonTogetherFund #ChurstonTogether

While many allergies result in only mild symptoms, some can be far more dangerous, causing life-threatening episodes of anaphylaxis that require swift intervention. This week’s guide helps break down the warning signs and outlines the immediate steps to take when every second counts. It also provides a useful overview of the most common food allergens – from milk and eggs to shellfish and sesame – as well as common non-food triggers like insect venom, pollen, and medication. With clear guidance on recognising the symptoms of a serious reaction and the role of devices like auto-injectors, this resource can help adults feel more prepared and informed when supporting children with allergies. This free #WakeUpWednesday guide explains the basics of allergies and anaphylaxis, potentially life-threatening reactions that educators, carers, and parents alike should be able to recognise and respond to quickly. Fantastic outing for our U13 Rugby team at the Central Venue League tournament hosted by Teignmouth Community College! The squad put in a series of huge performances across four competitive matches, securing a solid win against Teign, two thrilling draws against Dawlish and Kingsbridge, and suffering just a single, narrow defeat to host side Teignmouth. Standout moments were everywhere on the pitch... Roman led the attack with powerful, unstoppable carries, crossing the line for three brilliant tries, Alfie put on a kicking clinic, repeatedly pinning back defenses to win crucial territory and Wilson set the tone with relentless, hard-hitting tackles all tournament long. An incredible team effort, well done boys! What a brilliant start to the season for our Churston U19 Netball team - two games down, two fantastic wins under our belt! On Wednesday the 7th, the team hit the road for our very first AOC game of the season against Yeovil. On World Mental Health Day, we thought we'd re-share this important post... Talking to children about mental health hard sometimes: even to the point that adults can put off raising the topic, not wanting to unearth problems or discuss overwhelming subjects that we perceive our child is too young or not ready for. Rather than keeping children in the dark, however, this guide is designed to help you confidently talk about mental health, so that youngsters feel comfortable talking about their own worries and end any stigma before it begins. This online safety guide focuses on supporting children’s mental health by providing 10 potential conversation starters for parents. It also offers tips on talking about mental health naturally, being open and honest and asking twice. Our annual Future Choices event helps our Year 11 students understand their options after GCSEs, including A-Levels, T-Levels and Apprenticeships. It encourages students to explore their interests and keep their options open, so they can build a flexible foundation for future education, training, university and career opportunities. The event started with a continuation of our Future Discovery: Live programme, with Kit Greenslade hosting a 'Sofa Session' supported by alumni Jade Scott, Ben Loten and Gabriella-Mae Mitchell. The students also received useful guidance and information from Pete Reeves (Next Steps South West) and Scarlett Esprit (South Devon College). Day 2 started with a presentation from our Head of Sixth Form, Mr Shellum followed by a Q&A session with our sixth form ambassadors. Thank you to all our guests for giving their time to support our students as they stand at one of the most exciting crossroads of their education. #CFGS #churstongrammar #churstongrammarschool #CFGSFutureChoices #CFGScareers #CFGScareerssupport #CFGSfutures #OldChurstonians #CFGSAlumni #WeAreChurston #ChurstonTogetherCircle #ChurstonTogether

At the beginning of October a group of Physics and Politics A-Level students had a fantastic and educational trip to Geneva, Switzerland. As well as a tour around the United Nations buildings and the Red Cross museum, students got the opportunity to visit the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Here we visited the superconducting magnet manufacturing plant and the impossibly named Antimatter Factory! So much excellent Physics and Engineering at CERN and a fascinating view of international politics and relations at both the UN and Red Cross. Thanks to all of the students and staff involved. The trip was a great success and finished in style with a meal at a restaurant complete with cheese fondue and alphorn musical accompaniment! Before the latest results are announced, we are reminded of our prestigious accolade of being named Highly Commended State Secondary School of the Year 2026! The Times reports: Three of the five schools that made the largest gains include Churston Ferrers Grammar School, which rose 147 places to rank 78th in the national table thanks to its impressive A-level results. The school, in Torbay, Devon - one of the more disadvantaged areas in England - is awarded Highly Commended State Secondary School of the Year. James Simpson, the head teacher, joined three years ago and banned smartphones within his first fortnight in charge. “I want us to move from good to exceptional,” he says. “Together we can make a real difference.” ________________________________________________ A huge well done to last year's Year 11 and Year 13 students and to all the staff supporting them to achieve so highly. I just want us to continue to provide a wonderful, supportive, opportunity-providing education for the community we serve.
