Day in the Life at Churston

At Churston, each day is a blend of stimulating learning with fun and recreation. Students are expected to work hard - but always with the right support and in a culture of kindness and community.

Every day at Churston is filled with exciting new ideas and challenges as we progress through our carefully planned curriculum.

From discussions and planning at registration, to an engaging mix of classes throughout the day, and onto a fantastic choice of lunchtime clubs and sporting options after school, it's an absorbing and varied timetable. There's plenty of opportunity for having fun and forming friendships along the way, too.

Developing a passion for learning

At Churston, learning isn’t a passive process. Every student is encouraged to truly engage with subject matter, to question it and think critically. When we connect what we learn with our social themes and we provoke discussion, education really comes to life. So students feel engaged and take ownership of their learning.

Hard work with the freedom to play

The intellectual demands at Churston are considerable, as you would expect from a grammar school. We require that students show up with an eagerness to learn and a hunger to demonstrate what they are capable of. There is, however, ample opportunity too for leisure and relaxation, as respite from work. Wellbeing is at the core of our culture and we consider this balance to be essential.

Friendship, support and a sense of belonging

Young people’s time at secondary school is about so much more than what they study in the classroom. We work to create an environment where kindness, compassion and mutual support are prized. The school day has plenty of space for fun, social activities and time to form valued friendships.

Enriching experiences after the final bell

We’re proud to present a diverse selection of co-curricular activities for our young people to take part in after school. With multiple clubs and sports to choose from, students can develop existing passions or discover new ones – while benefiting from building teamwork skills and confidence.

The four expectations that guide us

Be kind

Compassion and mutual respect are of the highest importance at Churston. We are reminded to be a positive force for those around us, from the classroom to our wider community. When students leave our school with a strong moral sense and concern for the wellbeing of others, we have succeeded.

Aim high

As a selective grammar school, we are fortunate to work with highly academic young people. Our ambitious curriculum and teaching are designed to bring out the best in them. We expect our students to rise to this challenge with self-belief and high aspirations.

Work hard

Talent must be nurtured to fulfil its potential. We expect our students to commit diligently to their learning and to show a positive attitude to tasks. A consistently strong work ethic drives achievement. This builds confidence and resilience, which brings further success.

Take responsibility

We support students to grow in independence. This means developing the ability to make good decisions and to stand by them. It also calls on them to reflect honestly on mistakes and to learn from them. It’s an approach that helps shape our young people into responsible and mature individuals.

"I have 2 children at Churston. Both have had an exceptional experience. Varied subjects, outstanding support and they have both been very happy. Thank you for making their secondary school education such a positive one."
