Learning Support and SEN
Churston is committed to ensuring that students with additional learning needs receive the support, understanding, and resources they need to thrive. Being academically selective does not mean being inflexible.

Academic ability and additional needs.
We understand that some of our most academically able students also have additional learning needs. Our approach to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is built on early identification, honest communication with families, and tailored provision. We want every student to feel integrated, supported, and confident in their ability to excel.
How we support our students
Support at Churston is practical, individualised, and focused on removing barriers to learning so that every young person can reach their potential.

Early identification
We monitor progress closely and work proactively to understand each student's specific needs as quickly as possible.
In-class support
We provide targeted classroom assistance, including teaching assistants and differentiated learning resources to ensure the curriculum is fully accessible.
Exam access arrangements
Organised well in advance, we ensure fair testing environments by arranging extra time, readers, scribes, or separate rooms where needed.
Partnership with families
We believe that the most effective learning support is rooted in honest, ongoing collaboration between the school and parents.

Knowing who to talk to
Mr Alistair King is Churston’s SENDCO and a member of the Senior Leadership Team. He oversees the strategic development of our SEN provision and ensures that every student's individual needs are met with compassion and professional expertise. Parents are always welcome to reach out to discuss their child's requirements.
Policies and local offer
We maintain transparent, accessible documentation detailing our SEND provision. You can find our statutory policies, school offer, and links to local support networks below.
Your first point of contact for learning support is our SENDCO, Mr Alistair King. You can reach him via email at alistair.king@churstongrammar.com or by calling the main school office.
Yes. We arrange exam access for students who require it. Depending on assessed needs, this may include extra time, the use of a reader or scribe, or completing exams in a separate room.
We focus on early identification. This involves working closely with primary schools during the transition to Year 7, continuously monitoring student progress, and maintaining open dialogue with parents.
