Safeguarding
We are committed to the safeguarding of all our students, staff, and visitors. Safeguarding is a priority, and we have put rigorous arrangements in place to ensure everyone’s safety on the school grounds and during off-site activities.

A safe environment
At Churston Ferrers Grammar School, the safety and welfare of every student is our highest priority. We ensure that safeguarding legislation and guidance are adhered to when developing our policies, and we work hard to provide a safe physical environment for everyone.
It is a condition of employment that all staff hold a clear, enhanced DBS check and are trained to an appropriate level depending on their core responsibilities. We maintain a culture of vigilance and care, working in accordance with the statutory guidance set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
A dedicated team for every year group
Like all schools, Churston has a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) who holds overall responsibility. However, we also have an extensive safeguarding team, with colleagues taking specific responsibility for particular year groups to ensure comprehensive cover and support.
Designated Safeguarding Lead:
- Mr David Lewis, Deputy Head Teacher
Deputy Safeguarding Leads:
- Mrs Pili Hegarty — Safeguarding Lead for Year 7
- Mrs Jo Denham — Safeguarding Lead for Years 8 and 9
- Mrs Julie Beasley — Safeguarding Lead for Years 10 and 11
- Mr Martin Swannell — Safeguarding Lead for Years 12 and 13
- Mr Lee Shellum — Safeguarding Lead for Sixth Form
If you have a concern, please tell us
If you have a concern about the welfare or safety of a child, please contact the school without delay. We would always rather receive a concern that turns out to be unfounded than miss something that matters.
- During the school day: Call us on 01803 842289 or email enquiries@churstongrammar.com and ask to speak to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Out of hours: If you have a concern outside of school hours, please contact the Torbay Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) or Devon Children's Services.
- In an emergency: If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 999.
