Useful Information

The practical details for current Sixth Form students and parents - from the school day timetable to our dress code and transport links.

How your day works

Life in the Sixth Form involves a shift towards managing your own time. When you are not in timetabled A-Level lessons, you are expected to use your independent study periods effectively.

  • Arrival: Students must be on-site and registered by 8:35 AM.
  • Study Periods: The Sixth Form Centre offers dedicated quiet study areas for focused work, alongside social spaces for breaks.
  • Leaving Site: Year 12 and 13 students are permitted to leave the school site during lunchtime, provided they sign out and back in at the Sixth Form reception.

What to wear

We treat our Sixth Formers as young adults, which means you do not wear a school uniform. However, Churston is a working and learning environment, and your clothing should reflect that.

  • The expectation: Dress sensibly, comfortably, and suitably for a school setting where younger students are present.
  • What to avoid: Clothing displaying offensive slogans or imagery, and overly revealing items.
  • Lanyards: For safeguarding and security reasons, your Sixth Form ID lanyard must be worn and visible at all times while on the school site.

Transport and travel

Students travel to Churston from across Torbay and the South Hams. Please note that on-site parking for Sixth Form students is not permitted, so we encourage the use of public transport, walking, or cycling.

  • The Number 12 Bus: The most common route for Torbay students. To ensure safety, local authority buses come directly onto the school site at the end of the day.
  • South Hams Dedicated Coaches: AB Coaches run a dedicated private service from Newton Abbot, Ashburton, and Totnes. Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Cycling: Safe, secure cycle storage is available on-site for students who prefer to cycle.

If you cannot attend

Good attendance is directly linked to A-Level success. If you are unwell or unable to attend school for any reason, it is essential that we are informed as early as possible.

  • How to report: A parent or carer must contact the Sixth Form office on the morning of your first day of absence.
  • Contact details: Please email the Sixth Form admin team or call the main reception (01803 842289) and ask for the Sixth Form office.
  • Planned absences: For planned medical appointments or university visits, please notify your tutor and the Sixth Form office in advance.
