Joining Churston Sixth Form

Whether you're already part of our school community or coming to us from somewhere else entirely, we want the process of joining our Sixth Form to feel straightforward and welcoming - not daunting.

You belong here

Our Sixth Form welcomes both students continuing from Year 11 at Churston and external applicants from other schools across Torbay, South Hams, and beyond.

We're a genuinely co-educational Sixth Form - students from any school background, any experience, any ambition are encouraged to apply. What we're looking for isn't a perfect record; it's commitment, motivation, and the desire to take your education seriously. If that's you, we'd love to hear from you.

“I met inspiring professionals who really cared about people, motivating me to want to further pursue Medicine as a career.”

Adam
Year 13 Student

“Why not try everything - you never know, you might find the thing you enjoy most.”

Adam
Year 13 Student

"One thing I have learnt throughout my time at Churston, and especially in sixth form, is to take and make use of opportunities when they arise."

Charlie
Year 13 Student

“During our beach clean with Churston, we came together as a community to protect our beautiful coastline. It was inspiring to see everyone pitching in, turning a simple day at school into an opportunity to care for our environment. Every piece of litter we collected was a reminder that together, we can forge a cleaner, healthier planet.”

Lucas
Year 12 Student

“Collaboration and empathy have shaped how I lead and support others.”

Zuzia
Year 13 Student / Student President

"It is important to invest in your future self. Constantly try to improve yourself by nurturing your mind and pushing yourself, we can't become what we want to be by remaining the same."

Daisy
Year 13 Student

What you'll need to apply

Entrance into our Sixth Form is based on GCSE results, and we make conditional offers ahead of results day so you know where you stand early. We typically look for a strong set of GCSE grades across a range of subjects, including specific grade requirements in the subjects you wish to study at A Level.

Six straightforward steps

Step 1

Come and see us

Attend one of our Sixth Form open events or arrange a personal visit to the school. It's the best way to see our facilities, meet our staff, and get a feel for the community you'd be joining.

Step 2

Submit your application

Complete our Sixth Form application form, available online or from the school office. The form is straightforward and shouldn't take long to complete.

Step 3

Receive a conditional offer

We'll assess your application and, based on your expected GCSE grades, make you a conditional offer. This sets out the grades we'll need to confirm your place.

Step 4

Confirm your subject choices

Once you have an offer, we'll work with you to confirm your intended A Level subjects. You'll have the chance to discuss options with subject teachers and our Sixth Form team if you'd like guidance.

Step 5

Results day confirmation

When your GCSE results arrive, we'll be in touch to confirm your place. If you meet the entry requirements, your place in the Sixth Form is secured. If your results are close to but not exactly as predicted, please do contact us - we consider each case individually.

Step 6

Join us in September

Welcome to Churston Sixth Form. Induction week is designed to help you settle in, meet your peers, and start your A Level journey with confidence - whether you're familiar with the school or joining us for the very first time.

New to Churston? You're very welcome.

A significant number of our Sixth Form students join us from other schools - and they settle in quickly and thrive. Our Sixth Form community is intentionally welcoming to new faces. Induction week is structured with external students firmly in mind, and you'll quickly find that Churston's culture makes it easy to feel at home. We are a co-educational Sixth Form and welcome applications from students of any background and from any school.

If you have questions about what to expect or how to make the transition, our admissions team is happy to talk.

Unlike Year 7 admissions, Sixth Form applications are made directly to Churston, rather than through the local authority. We welcome around 50–60 external students into Year 12 every year. You can find full details of the application process on our main Sixth Form Admissions page.

To join the Sixth Form, students must achieve a minimum of a Grade 6 in five GCSE subjects, as well as at least a Grade 5 in both English Language and Maths. Some specific A-Level subjects may also have their own individual grade requirements.

Absolutely. We hold dedicated Sixth Form open events during the year where you can explore the dedicated Sixth Form Centre, meet Mr Shellum and the team, and speak to current students. If you can’t make an open event, use the contact form above to enquire about a personal visit.
