This week, we wanted to celebrate the wide variety of clubs available at Churston. We are proud of the number and diversity of clubs on offer which provide students with exciting opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills and make new friends. Here we are showcasing just a few of the many fantastic clubs we have to offer; Top middle: Our funk band meets every Wednesday after school and is open to students in years 9 -13.They perform a diverse repertoire of pop and funk music and have played at local events such as Dart Music Festival and Devon County Show. Top right: Year 7 and 8 students and staff are busy creating knitted and crocheted squares in our Crochet and Knitting Club, which will be stitched together into cosy blankets for local care homes. We are so impressed by the wonderful squares they have made as they learn to knit and crochet and we can’t wait to see the finished result! Middle left: Green fingers? Why not join the Gardening Club. Every Week 1 Monday (P4) Centre: Interested in representing the school at netball? Come along to Netball Club and show us what you can do - all year groups are included, check the clubs list for details. Middle right: Every Wednesday during P4,Table tennis Club is bustling with activity and excitement. Come and give it a try! Bottom left: Yr 7 and 8 love Board Game Club on Tuesdays. It's a great way to make new friends. Bottom middle: If basketball is your passion, come along and have a go! There is provision for every year group- see the clubs list for details. Fantastic outing for our U13 Rugby team at the Central Venue League tournament hosted by Teignmouth Community College! The squad put in a series of huge performances across four competitive matches, securing a solid win against Teign, two thrilling draws against Dawlish and Kingsbridge, and suffering just a single, narrow defeat to host side Teignmouth. Standout moments were everywhere on the pitch... Roman led the attack with powerful, unstoppable carries, crossing the line for three brilliant tries, Alfie put on a kicking clinic, repeatedly pinning back defenses to win crucial territory and Wilson set the tone with relentless, hard-hitting tackles all tournament long. What a brilliant start to the season for our Churston U19 Netball team - two games down, two fantastic wins under our belt! The action kicked off on Friday the 2nd with the first round of the Sisters in Sport competition against Ivybridge. The girls hit the court firing on all cylinders, putting on a great performance to take the win and advance to Round 2, where we'll be taking on Maynard next week. On Wednesday the 7th, the team hit the road for our very first AOC game of the season against Yeovil. It was a dominant display from start to finish, with the girls winning every single quarter to secure a super strong away victory. A massive shoutout to this match's standouts: Coach’s Player: Marley Player’s Player: Lydia Opposition’s Player: Aya Next up, we're looking ahead to a huge week with our Sisters in Sport match against Maynard and our first round of the AOC Cup against Strode. On World Mental Health Day, we thought we'd re-share this important post... Our annual Future Choices event helps our Year 11 students understand their options after GCSEs, including A-Levels, T-Levels and Apprenticeships. It encourages students to explore their interests and keep their options open, so they can build a flexible foundation for future education, training, university and career opportunities. The event started with a continuation of our Future Discovery: Live programme, with Kit Greenslade hosting a 'Sofa Session' supported by alumni Jade Scott, Ben Loten and Gabriella-Mae Mitchell. The students also received useful guidance and information from Pete Reeves (Next Steps South West) and Scarlett Esprit (South Devon College). Day 2 started with a presentation from our Head of Sixth Form, Mr Shellum followed by a Q&A session with our sixth form ambassadors. At the beginning of October a group of Physics and Politics A-Level students had a fantastic and educational trip to Geneva, Switzerland. As well as a tour around the United Nations buildings and the Red Cross museum, students got the opportunity to visit the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Here we visited the superconducting magnet manufacturing plant and the impossibly named Antimatter Factory! So much excellent Physics and Engineering at CERN and a fascinating view of international politics and relations at both the UN and Red Cross. Thanks to all of the students and staff involved. The trip was a great success and finished in style with a meal at a restaurant complete with cheese fondue and alphorn musical accompaniment! Before the latest results are announced, we are reminded of our prestigious accolade of being named Highly Commended State Secondary School of the Year 2026! The Times reports: Three of the five schools that made the largest gains include Churston Ferrers Grammar School, which rose 147 places to rank 78th in the national table thanks to its impressive A-level results. The school, in Torbay, Devon - one of the more disadvantaged areas in England - is awarded Highly Commended State Secondary School of the Year. James Simpson, the head teacher, joined three years ago and banned smartphones within his first fortnight in charge. “I want us to move from good to exceptional,” he says. “Together we can make a real difference.” ________________________________________________ A huge well done to last year's Year 11 and Year 13 students and to all the staff supporting them to achieve so highly.
