The Churston Ethos

In our school’s supportive culture, values and relationships matter as much as academic excellence.

The four expectations that guide us

For our school to work as a positive, supportive community, it is everyone's duty to follow our key rules. These are a reminder to each of us that our attitudes and actions have real impacts, both for ourselves and for those around us.

Be kind

Compassion and mutual respect are of the highest importance at Churston. We are reminded to treat others well, both at school and in our wider community. When students leave Churston with a strong moral sense and concern for the wellbeing of others, we have succeeded.

Aim high

As a selective grammar school, we are fortunate to work with highly academically young people. Our ambitious curriculum and teaching are designed to bring out the best in them. We expect our students to rise to this challenge, while we support their self-belief and high aspirations.

Work hard

Talent must be nurtured to fulfil its potential. We expect our students to commit diligently to their learning and to show a positive attitude to tasks. A consistently strong work ethic drives achievement. This builds confidence and resilience, which brings further success.

Take responsibility

We support students to grow in independence. This means developing the ability to make good decisions and to stand by them. It also calls on them to reflect honestly on mistakes and to learn from them. This helps shape our young people into responsible and mature individuals.

The key principles that guide us

Our five values shape everything we do at Churston. They are ideas that motivate us to be at our best, and to act with purpose and consideration.

Self-development

Empowering the growth of the whole student

We believe that education is about more than only academic learning. Our students develop resilience, and appreciate the importance of kindness and taking responsibility, helping create well-rounded people ready for adult life.

Scholarship

Fulfilling potential through academic rigour

Delivering an exceptional education for our students is a top priority for us. Through fostering self-confidence and motivation, we help create the right conditions for the bright young minds at Churston to thrive and excel.

Active citizenship

Playing a positive part in society

We’re keen to encourage everyone to find their place in their community. We offer diverse opportunities for students to get involved in groups beyond school, to be a strong voice and to cooperate to make life better for all.

Social justice

Working to make the world a fairer place

Our students are made aware of the daily struggles faced by many, both locally and on a global scale. We discuss injustice and how we can challenge it, and we take real action to support those in need, with respect and compassion.

Sustainability

Being champions for our environment

Protecting the planet we share is a responsibility for all of us. We work together to make our school greener in practical ways, while developing an understanding of the issues that our global environment faces.

Supporting students to become strong, adaptable learners

At Churston, we provide the conditions for our young people to take control of their own development. We nurture confidence and self-reliance so that students persevere, even in the face of tough challenges.

We greatly appreciate the time, variety, and effort that go into the extra-curricular activities, particularly the sporting opportunities. It has also been wonderful to see our son already thinking more deeply about potential career paths, which seems to be helping him stay focused and motivated in his work."
