Our Pastoral Promise

Supporting the wellbeing of every young person is our top priority at Churston. We’re a school where kindness and compassion are embedded in everything we do. More than this, we are always open to listening to every student’s needs without judgement, and do everything in our power to support them.

Wellbeing is at our heart.

Pastoral care isn’t simply the role of one department at Churston. It runs through our whole school culture. Nothing is more important than the wellbeing of our young people, so we promote compassion and kindness in every area. This helps to create a supportive and cohesive environment that is good for everyone.

Help for anyone who needs it

The secondary school years can be difficult at times, and when any student needs extra support or reassurance, our doors are always open. Our pastoral team are here to talk to, and our young people can feel confident to come to us knowing that their voice will be heard, and that we’ll endeavour to support them without judgement.

Guiding our young people’s growth

When we place trust in students, they respond by learning and growing in maturity. We appreciate that everyone makes mistakes. By guiding young people to understand and take ownership for their actions, rather than using shame and punishment, we achieve something more - a lasting sense of understanding and responsibility.

How we live our values every day

One of our core expectations is to Be Kind, and it is built into every part of our school life. This, together with our focus on wellbeing, self-development and active citizenship, runs through our curriculum, our daily habits and our school practices.

  • Kindness in everything we do
  • Taking responsibility for actions
  • Discipline built on understanding

Our ultimate promise is to equip your child with more than just academic success. By providing a safe space to take risks, learn from mistakes, and grow in independence, we build the self-belief and resilience they need to step out of their comfort zone. When a student leaves Churston, they don’t just leave with excellent grades - they leave knowing who they are, how to support others, and how to navigate the world with confidence.

“My vision is for students to feel supported and nurtured whilst simultaneously building the resilience and independence needed for the wider world.”

“My one piece of advice for younger students would be to take every opportunity that presents itself to you, even if it’s something that pushes you out of your comfort zone - those experiences will help you grow into the best version of yourself.”

“Participating in music and drama events has helped me develop my confidence throughout my time at Churston, helping me to feel comfortable performing on a stage. These things also teach you how to be dedicated and work towards a common team goal.”

Tom
Student

"We have been really impressed with Churston so far. Our son has settled in extremely well and is clearly enjoying his time at the school. We greatly appreciate the time, variety, and effort that go into the extra-curricular activities, particularly the sporting opportunities. It has also been wonderful to see our son already thinking more deeply about potential career paths, which seems to be helping him stay focused and motivated in his work."
