Enrichment and Personal Development

Academic success is only part of the story. The Sixth Form Churston Baccalaureate is founded on the principle that taking a holistic approach to your development provides the strongest platform for your future well-being and success.

Enrichment trips have long been a highly anticipated and memorable part of life at Churston. From subject specific day trips to cultural visits to European cities and adventurous overseas expeditions, we recognise the huge value that the experience of a school trip can bring. Self development through new experiences and challenges underpins the formation of lifelong memories.

Experiences that shape your future

Expeditions and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Alongside our school trips, an excellent proportion of our Sixth Formers take on the ultimate challenge of the Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Journeying across Dartmoor, Exmoor, or the mountains of Eryri in North Wales, you will build remarkable resilience, teamwork, and independence.

Active Citizenship and Leadership

We believe our students have a responsibility to their community. Every Sixth Former completes a minimum of 10 hours of active citizenship - with many contributing 30, 50, or even 100 hours. Whether mentoring younger pupils, running lower-school clubs, or volunteering locally, you will log your hours through the Vinspired platform to gain external accreditation.

Wednesday Electives

Wednesday afternoons are protected time away from your A-Level textbooks. You choose your own electives, which range from representing the school in competitive sports or guided fitness, to self-development options like outdoor education, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), Model United Nations, and debating.

Careers and Work Experience

Your personal development includes looking ahead. Through our dedicated tutor curriculum, targeted careers education, and a specific Year 12 work experience programme, we support you in exploring your post-18 options, refining your aspirations, and building real-world professional skills.

Building Your Portfolio

To ensure you get the most out of these experiences, you will use the Unifrog platform to record your achievements against the Skills Builder Framework. This creates a ready-made, comprehensive portfolio that is incredibly easy to draw upon when writing your UCAS personal statement, crafting a CV, or applying for competitive degree apprenticeships.

Where our students go

Our trips programme is designed to broaden horizons, whether that means studying local ecosystems or exploring entirely new cultures. While our itinerary changes each year, recent experiences have included:

  • Cultural & Subject Visits: Short-haul European city breaks and language immersion trips.
  • Overseas Expeditions: Far-reaching, adventurous cultural experiences to destinations such as Peru and Morocco.
  • Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions: Remote and challenging multi-day treks across Dartmoor, Exmoor, and the Cadair Idris mountains in North Wales.
  • Ski Trips: High-energy winter sports residentials, with dry-slope training available beforehand.

“Why not try everything - you never know, you might find the thing you enjoy most.”

Adam

“During our beach clean with Churston, we came together as a community to protect our beautiful coastline. It was inspiring to see everyone pitching in, turning a simple day at school into an opportunity to care for our environment. Every piece of litter we collected was a reminder that together, we can forge a cleaner, healthier planet.”

Lucas
Year 12 Student

“I met inspiring professionals who really cared about people, motivating me to want to further pursue Medicine as a career.”

"It is important to invest in your future self. Constantly try to improve yourself by nurturing your mind and pushing yourself, we can't become what we want to be by remaining the same."
