AS/A2 BUSINESS STUDIES ‘A’ LEVEL

Business Studies is essentially a problem solving course centering on how businesses operate in the real world.  The subject can be applied to any organisation and it will also offer an insight into the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in any career.

What course do we run?

Students follow the Edexcel specification in Business Studies.  The course content is both stimulating and practical for the real world.  There is a significant emphasis on how to start up a new business and the international dimension.

AS Business Studies / Year 12

Unit 1:  Developing New Business Ideas (25%)

This unit covers the characteristics students would need to develop to be successful in business.  It also examines how ideas on products and services are generated.

Unit 2:                 Managing the Business                  (25%)

Here the internal workings of a business will be analysed.  It covers the four key areas of Marketing, Finance, Operations and People.  Students will get the opportunity to study issues such as promotional campaigns, motivational theory and accounting methods.

A2 Business Studies / Year 13

Unit 3:  International Business                  (25%)

This unit will introduce the students to the world of international business and the issues that a company trading internationally will have to consider.  It will cover topics such as the significance of the emerging markets of China and India.

Unit 4:  Making Business Decisions          (25%)

Students will learn to assess the causes and effects of change on a business and examine how the company could manage risk effectively.  They will be able to think strategically taking both internal and external factors into account.

Currently Business Studies student have numerous opportunities to enrich their learning through activities such as Industrial Visits, Young Enterprise, the ’Student Investor Challenge’ and numerous other competitions.
