On 1st and 2nd May the school competed in the
Torbay & S.W. England Festival. There were
performances from the Choir, Chamber Choir, Orchestra
and String Group.
The
Choir and Chamber Choir sang in their class against
the Girls’ Grammar School Choir and the
Stover School Choir. The Choir sang “Lean
on Me” by Bill Withers and “Now is
the Month of Maying” by Thomas Morley and
the Close Harmony Choir sang “Rhythm of
Life” and “Life Thine Eyes to the
Mountain” by Fellix Mendelssohn. After professional
performances from both groups the adjudicator,
Fiona Chryssides, gave her verdict and awarded
the Choir a total of 84 and the Chamber Choir
a score of 82. The Choir won the class with their
mark and were presented with the Paignton Zoo
cup for the best Schools’ Choir. It is the
second time that the Choir have won - the last
time being in 2005 so were over the moon to be
successful again.
The
Orchestra and the String Group both performed
on the Friday against groups from the Girls’
Grammar and Stover. The Orchestra played “Wallace
and Gromit” and “Dr Who” and
the String Group played “Pavane & Basse
Danse”. We were awarded marks of 84 for
the Orchestra, kindly conducted by Mr. Allnutt,
and 81 for the String Group. The groups came 3rd
and 2nd in their classes which was a fantastic
achievement.
Many
individual students also took part in the event
on piano, violin, voice and flute – proving
yet again the level of talent that we have at
Churston.
All
the groups and the Jazz Band and Percussion group
will be performing in the Summer Concert on 5th
June, 7.00 in the school hall. We hope to see
you there.

N. Allnutt Acting Head of Music
