Meeting
The Needs Of
Able And Talented Students
Since
it opened in 1957, Churston Ferrers Grammar School has sustained
a reputation for excellence. Our committed and highly qualified
staff have inspired and motivated generations of students to excel
academically or make their mark in sport or performing arts.
In
this web page, we outline our policy for maximizing the achievements
of our most able and talented students. We recognize that some
youngsters have outstanding ability in many areas whereas others
will have more specific talents. It is our aim to identify and
cultivate potential wherever it is found. This reflects the school’s
philosophy of providing the best possible education for each individual
student,
both through differentiation and concern for the whole person.
Churston
Ferrers Grammar School offers an exciting opportunity to the brightest
youngster - an education for success in an increasingly competitive
world.
Gathering Information
We find out about students’ abilities through:
•
formal testing and assessment
• teacher recommendation
• primary liaison
• parental contact
• achievement in out-of-school activities
We
recognise that high ability may not always be reflected in appropriate
attainment. Where this is the case, we help the student to overcome
difficulties which stand in the way of success.
Provision
for More Able Students
At
Churston Ferrers Grammar School, we know that we are privileged
to teach young people who all have above average ability. We also
appreciate that some of our students have exceptional talents
and may need special consideration.
Our
provision for very able students takes many forms. Teachers employ
a variety of teaching and learning strategies, which are designed
to generate enthusiasm, challenge the mind and develop independence.
Setting is used in certain subjects and many lessons involve differentiated
activities. The school also offers a wide range of stimulating
trips, extracurricular activities and links with commerce and
industry. National competitions and other special events provide
different avenues for talented students to develop their interests
and experience challenge.
School
ethos
This
school has various enviable qualities, many of which are related
to the extremely high quality of personal relationships between
teachers and youngsters. Our students respect their teachers and
lessons are engaging, purposeful and enjoyable. Our teachers work
hard to create stimulating classes with a positive climate in
which every student feels valued and supported.
At
Churston Ferrers Grammar School there is a strong work ethic and
the atmosphere of high aspiration and reward encourages all students
to do their best.
