On
Wednesday 2nd July, 27 Russian students joined
our school for a day. We were really privileged
to host this group of students from Moscow.
Mr Owers and Mr Goldsmith gave a tour of the
school to the youngsters and their teachers.
A wide range of activities took place in lesson
time when the group was split to attend a
few lessons. The school parliament and 6 sixth
formers interviewed the students and their
stay ended with an assembly to year 10 during
which they spoke about traditional artefacts
and customs.
It did not take long before Churston pupils
and our guests were playing together outside
and exchanging email addresses. Elena Mitina
will be running a Russian club at lunch time
in the autumn term and no doubt a large number
of pupils would benefit from attending to
experience learning from another culture,
reaching out and making new friends.

Amongst
the sixth formers, Lydia stone and Hannah Townsend
helped with the activities and being linguists
they wrote in French their impression of the
day: "Hier nous avons rencontre des eleves
russes et j'ai appris des choses sur la langue,
la culture et la vie quotidienne. Beaucoup d'eleves
habitent dans des apartements, les eleves parlaient
tres bien anglais. J'ai appris des nombres,
bonjour, au revoir et je t'aime!!!"

Year 9 students: " Meeting the Russian
was really interesting, they were so cool. We
asked them questions about their school and
culture and found out things like they have
6 days a week of school! All have at least 4
hours of homework a night! Their english was
very good, probably from all their homework"
Members of the school parliament: " we
spoke about football to start with, so we got
on very well. A lot of them say that they live
in flats, their routine is different from ours
and they live in Moscow which is now a place
which I would love to visit!"
I would like to thank the teachers who happily
welcomed the students in their lessons. It was
a fantastic day. The beginning of some strong
links and friendships between Churston pupils
and the Russian pupils.
