Paris Trip 2007

Paris Trip

9.45pm - Friday 19 October: 40 pupils from year 9, 10,11 and 13 along with staff members Mr and Mrs Mills,Mrs Smith and Mrs Wakeham waited expectantly for the coach to take us on our trip to Paris. There was real buzz in the air as we settled in to (try to) sleep through the night before boarding the morning ferry to Calais at Dover and even though we were wrapped in our sleeping bags and fleecy blankets, sleep evaded us!

After a couple of stops on the way and bumping into more England rugby fans, we finally made it to Paris around lunchtime and stopped for our first visit at the Arc de Triomphe. After reaching the dizzy heights of the Arc and viewing the Paris traffic negotiating the roundabout below ( for anyone who has not had the experience of climbing the never ending spiral staircase inside the Arc – coming back down is akin to coming off the Rock and Roller coaster at Eurodisney – particularly after very little sleep!)

Next stop Notre Dame and time for afternoon tea for some of the more mature members of the party – the rest watched the exciting rollerblading and skating that was taking place adjacent to to the Hunchback’s home.

Next morning after a hearty continental breakfast and a good night’s sleep we went on our first excursion of the day to Sacre Coeur and Montmartre – the ‘artists quarter’. The weather was glorious, if cold and on return to the coach most of the group had negotiated good deals on various types of caricatures and portraits of themselves.

Next stop was the ‘fleamarket’ – we all got a real flavour of the real Paris here for the two hours – shopping, haggling with stallholders for our purchases, avoiding the ever present pickpockets and finding places to eat lunch.

Onward then to the Trocadero Gardens for a group photo with Eiffel’s Tower in the background and a walk through past all the TV and media vans shipped in for the rugby and then on to the Montparnasse Tower where we took a ride in Europe’s fastest lift – travelling 56 floors in 38 seconds

Next day – Eurodisney! Traffic in and out of Paris was heavier than usual due to the transport strike but we made it! Childhood dreams hit us all as we walked towards Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and, as with the trip to the Montparnasse Tower, there were many feats achieved here (particularly those of us convinced we were unable to attempt any ride apart from the Disney Steam Train, ‘It’s a Small World’ and the Mississippi Steam Boat’ ) and the inner children of the adults on the trip were unleashed unashamedly! ‘Mickey’ and his friends did us proud – and with the finale at the end of both days being the magnificent parades we had the time of our lives.

Our evening trip for Monday was to the Eiffel Tower. A magical experience to end a magical day (although I m not sure that some of the couples who had hoped for a romantic moment or two as is the tradition of the tower were best pleased about 40 school children surging on them) and for a few of us, again overcoming very bravely their fears of lifts and heights meant that there were some very proud members of the party as all of us managed to get to the top – a first for Churston.

8.30pm Wednesday 24 October - back at Churston. The trip home was uneventful and we made good time arriving back at Churston one and half hours earlier than expected to enjoy the rest of the half term break (and time to get over the non-stop all action trip!)
