Peru Schools In Floods
Our link schools have hit the news in Peru and beyond, with recent severe flooding affecting Lucre and the neighbouring villages. International news channels have widely reported destruction of the rail link to Macchu Piccu, and the consequent rescue of thousands of foreign tourists in the past week.
However only in the last few days have we heard that Lucre, the village where our link school is has also been badly affected. In the neighbouring village, Huacarpay, where the primary school is linked with Eden Park in Brixham, all the houses are gone, and villagers are living in a makeshift camp set up in the school.
In Lucre many houses have been destroyed by the water, and that means that many of the children that attend the Colegio (secondary school), as well as White Rock’s link primary school have lost their homes and all their possessions.
The BBC’s international news website mentioned Lucre, and had an article and some pictures from a British man called Andrew Dare living in Cuzco who had been to the village to distribute food and clothing this week. Mrs Lewis made contact with him on Facebook to explain our concern and that we would be helping somehow. He replied the same day, only for her to find out that he is an ex-Churston student!
The cogs are turning now as to what we can do to help our villages, and in particular the children there. Watch this space over the next few days to find out what we and our partner primary schools will be doing to help.
